Constant Lambert

Lambert is best remembered as the first Music Director of what became the Royal Ballet, back in 1930. He also conducted many symphony concerts, but died at the early age of 46, preventing him from perhaps obtaining a full-time post with a major orchestra. He left a selection of rdcordings, many of which are quite rare. Here is a selection from my parents' collection shellac discs.

1. Rimsky: Ivan the Terrible Overture (Liverpool Phil, Columbia DX 1140)

2: Grieg Homage March (Halle, Col. DX 1037)

3 - 6: Purcell, arranged Lambert: Comus Ballet Suite (Halle, Col. DX 1076-7)

7 - 10: Adam, arr. Lambert: Giselle excerpts (Royal Opera House Orchestra, Col. DX 1270-1)

11: Chabrier: Danse Slave (Le Roi Malgre Lui) London Philharmonic, HMV C 3218)

As far as I know, none of these has appeared on CD. Transfers by my friend Norman Field of Birmingham, with very light cleaning up.

George Weldon

A year or two ago I was introduced to some recordings by this conductor, and I am now quite a fan. He had the misfortune to be overshadowed by other more flamboyant artists here in the UK, but his recording of Sleeping Beauty shows him to be a very accomplished conductor. He was popular with orchestras, as he was down-to-earth.

Here is the first of Moszkowski's Spanish Dances in Scharwenka's orchestration, played by the City of Birmingham Orchestra, matrix CAX 9320, Columbia DX 1225, 5th June 1945.

Stravinsky: Oedipus Rex (Cocteau, Pears, Modl)

OK, here is a sample (the Gloria Chorus that ends Act 1) from Stravinsky's first (Cologne) recording. You can download as either flac or mp3.

The cast is as follows:-

Oedipus: Peter Pears
Jocasta: Martha Modl
Creon & the Messenger: Heinz Rehfuss
Tiresias: Otto von Rohr
Shepherd: Helmut Krebs
Narrator: Jean Cocteau
Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra & Chorus

Recorded October 1951 (music) & June 1952 (narration)

The transfer was made by my good friend & colleague Greg Thompson of Casselberry, Florida.

This recording is available in flac & mp3 formats for download, or as a conventional CD, priced at £5, plus postage (60p in the UK, £1 to the rest of the world).

Welcome to my page

I think the title says it all. I am a classical music lover from the Midlands (UK), with a big collection of historical material that I would like to share. However, I am also in urgent need of cash, so cannot afford to upload recordings free (I would if I could!). I hope that if I can sell enough downloads, CDs, DVDs etc, I can use those funds to have other rare shellacs transferred to the highest standard and then share these too. I hope to provide links to some samples, after which you can purchase the whole disc.

That's the idea, anyway: more information as soon as it becomes available!
